How to Understand Medicare Plans

Medicare Basic Overview

Medicare has four parts: Part A Helps cover hospital costs. This part is free for most and is provided by the federal government. Part B Helps cover doctor visits and outpatient care. This part is optional and has a monthly premium. Part C Also called Medicare Advantage, Part C combines Parts A and B, and sometimes Part D. It may include extra benefits like vision and hearing exams, gym memberships and preventive services. Part C is optional and is provided through private insurance companies. Part D Helps cover prescription drug costs. This part is optional and costs money.

Medicare Part C is not a separate benefit. Part C is the part of Medicare policy that allows private health insurance companies to provide Medicare benefits. These Medicare private health plans, such as HMOs and PPOs, are known as Medicare Advantage Plans.

When Can I first enroll in part A?

Any time after your 65th birthday, and 3 months before. Enrollment will be automatic if you are receiving Social Security benefits, otherwise you will have to enroll at your local Social Security office.

What if I'm late?

Generally there no penalties for signing up late. you may pay a penalty on your premium for signing up late if you are one of the people who pay a monthly premium for Part A because neither you nor your spouse contributed enough to Social Security.

When Can I First enroll in part B  and c ?

You will have a window of 7 months to enroll in parts B and C. You will have three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and three months after your birthday month to enroll.

what if i'm late to enroll for part b and C?

If you enroll in part B after the initial enrollment period, premiums will be higher unless you qualify for an exception.If you miss the 7 month window, you must wait to join a plan between October 15- December 7th.
